Indoor plants create a welcoming feel in any space, whether they are as small as a table plant or as big as a living wall. They are a great addition to the decor of offices, businesses & homes! Like all plants, decorative plants can last for years but require some regular care to keep them healthy and beautiful. If you are new to owning plants, follow these maintenance tips to keep your plants thriving!

Choose the Right Container

The size of the container you store your plant in should be based on the size of the plant, making sure that there is enough space within for the plant’s roots to grow. Make sure that your plant’s new home has drainage holes at the bottom for excess water, as this feature is key for your plant to maintain proper hydration. You will also want to put a plate or tray under the container to catch leakage.

Maintain Proper Hydration

For each plant, you must find the balance between dehydrated and overhydrated. This can be tricky because plants that have a waxy texture, such as succulents, require less water than those with plusher leaves. Regularly water your plant and check it periodically by feeling the soil with your finger. Dry & light-colored soil likely needs water, while moist soil is all set.  Signs of overwatering include standing water on the top or bottom of your plant’s container and mold on top of the soil, while signs of dehydration include dry soil and brown or yellowing leaves. If your plant is either dehydrated or overwatered, this will damage its roots and prevent growth. In extreme cases, it can kill the plant altogether.

Choose a Stable Environment

Plants adjust to their environment and are sensitive to changes, so it is best to choose a place for your plant where you won’t frequently move it. Be sure to select a spot that gets adequate sunlight on a daily basis. You should choose the temperature and sun exposure based on the type of plant – Some plants require more warmth & sunlight, while others can thrive in cooler & darker environments.

Do Some Research

Remember that each type of plant has different needs in terms of containers, hydration, and the environment. They also benefit from different types of soil & nutrients. If you have never owned a plant before, research the individual needs of your plant type so that you are well informed and prepared to provide proper care.
