Spring is right around the corner in New England and with spring thoughts mean it’s almost time for a garden to be planted. It’s no secret that being outside is great for children, and gardening is a fun and interactive way for parents and children to spend time together. Kids can learn about the different plants and what they need to grow which they can use in their everyday life.

Benefits of Kids Gardening

  1. It will develop their senses. One of the biggest benefit of gardening with kids is that it uses all of their senses so it’s one of the best things you can do for sensory development. It will help your child develop their senses without them even realizing it, they get to see the beautiful flowers, feel the soil, seeds, petals, smell the soil and flowers when they bloom. Gardening also helps develop hand-eye coordination while building up their physical strength.
  2. As children continue to garden, they will be able to use the important motor skills they develop in school like writing, typing, and cutting. Gardening will also help with their brain development.
  3. Gardening teaches kids to eat healthier. Eating healthy food is vital for children’s development and sometimes it can be hard to have them want to eat fruits and vegetables. If they are growing their own fruits and vegetables, however, they will have a sense of pride when they’re eating them knowing that they grew them. Kids will grow up to love to eat healthy vegetables that they might not like otherwise.
  4. Kids can have fun while getting dirty. When kids are planting seeds and digging in the soil, they will get covered in dirt. Being dirt is a natural desire for children and when they are getting to be dirty by playing, they don’t need to be worried about the consequences.
  5. They will learn about nature. When kids garden they are learning about how important the environment is and it creates the perfect opportunity to teach kids about the importance of the environment and preserving what we can of it.
  6. Gardening builds their sense of community. No matter if it is a school garden, community garden, or a family garden you are teaching children how to work together to achieve a goal.
