There’s nothing like biting into a big juicy slice of watermelon in the middle of summer. An even better feeling is knowing that you grew it in your own garden. However, not everyone knows how tell when their watermelons are ripe. You want to pick them at the right time to get the sweetest fruit as possible. This happens at around 80 days after planting the seeds. That means that a few days before, you should be checking to see if they’re ready to pick. But how? Well there are two ways you could do this:

The Pigtail Test
Watermelons have curly stems called tendrils which resemble a pig’s tail. When the tendril closest to the watermelon turns brown it is signaling that it is longer being fed, and is ready to be harvested.

Underside Test
Another way to tell if your watermelon is ready, is by flipping the watermelon over to examine the side that was resting on the ground. If the skin is a pasty white, then you need to let go longer. Watermelons that have a darker yellow underside are ripe for the picking.
