Time to start thinking Exterior! With the warm weather approaching us it’s time to start thinking about your Spring and Summer plantings! The New England climate is definitely challenging, but also gives you more opportunities for exterior plantscape design. Whether it be Spring and Summer blooming, Foliage in the Fall, or Winter greens – the variations in climate open up doors to all sorts of different designs.

The big question this time a year is: How soon is too soon to start planting?

You don’t want to plant your flowers too early in the season for several reasons- the soil might not be ready yet, the flowers could freeze overnight, or the varying temperatures will shorten the overall plants life. In order to avoid these issues, make sure:

  • Soil is dry enough that if a handful is squeezed into a ball in your fist, it is easily shattered by pressing it with your finger or dropping it from a height of 3 feet or so. In order to avoid this issue overall, you could purchase specific potting soil for your needs.
  • There is no more overnight frost. This will ruin any plantings if it is cold enough. Average overnight temps should not be less than 40 degrees for optimum flowering success (depending on the flowers)

Plantings should be finished by late Spring/early Summer, if not earlier. Evergreen specializes in beautiful exterior displays, so call or email us today for a free quote!
