Plant trends seem to come and go, especially in Boston. With spring in full force, and summer just around the corner, it’s no secret that New England is ready for some warm weather. In office spaces alike, they’re getting ready to transition their cozy feel to a tropical oasis. Using plants to help create this vibe is a great way to perk up people who are walking by or coming into your space. How can you do this?

Bright and bold floral plants and flowers around any patio or seating space will help create this feeling for everyone who uses the space. We’ve compiled a list of a few of our favorite plants and trees to help create a look and feel for a tropical oasis.

Plants that will Create a Tropical Feel

Southern Magnolia

These plants have evergreen and waxy leaves that are known to be on mantles and front doors. They used to be known as a southern staple, but have now made it’s way into the tropical plant category as well. This is a great tree if you have a larger space to fill. Magnolia’s will go upwards of 30 feet and have beautiful blooms in the warmer months.

Crape Myrtle

Crape Myrtles come in a variety of shapes and sizes, they can range from small shrubs to mid-size trees up to 15-20 feet tall. All of these varieties can’t withstand the cold and harsh temperatures that New England brings, most of our customers who use this plant, choose a hardier version of them.

Tropical Hibiscus

These bright and colorful flowers make most people feel like they’ve magically been transported onto a tropical island. These flowers prefer the warm sunlight and come in a variety of pinks, reds, oranges, and yellows. These are some of our favorite plants and they’re very popular among people in Boston as well.

Hardy Hibiscus

The hardy hibiscus is a perennial cousin to the tropical hibiscus and can withstand a little more harsh of temperatures. They’re also larger and can grow up to 10-12 inches in the summer/warm months. They come in shades of whites, pinks and reds.

Mandevilla

The mandevilla is another great option for a tropical feel. These are climbing plants which makes them look beautiful on a trellis or fence. When mandevillas bloom, they tend to be smaller than hibiscus plants/flowers, but their colors are just as bright and vibrant.

Clematis

These plants are another climbing option, which we place a lot on trellis or mailboxes, and end up looking like a beautiful star-like tropical display. These flowers come in a few different colors, most popular are white and purple. Their vines give off a tropical feel and the vines are thicker which let the plants withstand the cooler New England temperatures.

Banana Plants

Banana plants are a great summery plant because of their tropical palmy look. In order to actually get bananas from this plant, you’d need some lucky warm & consistent weather and pay close attention to this plant and the amount of water/sunlight it’s getting. For the most part, it gets too cold in Boston for bananas to grow. If you are looking for a palm look though, these plants are great.
